Weapon and Spirit damage
Damage type and the stat that improves an attack are separate questions. A spell can scale with weapon damage while dealing spirit damage, and a bullet can carry an additional spirit effect. Buying defense against the wrong part leaves the actual threat unchanged.
Read a mixed attack in parts
Check the ability or item for its stated damage type and scaling. Paradox’s carbine is a useful example: weapon investment improves a spirit-damage shot. A weapon-focused opponent may also carry spirit procs, so the hero’s build label is not enough to choose resistance.
Buy for the source that lands
After a death, identify which attacks actually reached you and when. Protection against repeated bullets serves a different problem from surviving one spell burst. Offensively, invest in the part of your kit you can deliver reliably rather than treating every purple item as equal damage.
